Designers on Design: best things, concepts, places of 2007-Sandra Espinet
November 25, 2007

Like many in the know, I consider myself an Aman-junkie: a person addicted to anything Aman Resorts have to offer. They consistently design and operate the most luxurious, relaxing and best designed hotels in the world. My husband and I have been to most of their locations, and we even chose Amanusa in Bali for our wedding. I am always inspired by the beauty of their locations, the perfection of their interiors and the superb effort that goes into their creative hotels.

Amansara in Siem Reap, Cambodia was especially memorable. We were picked up at the airport in a black 1964 Mercedes stretch that Jackie Onassis gave to the (former) king. We were driven to a very discreet entrance to the gated compound that was previously the king’s guest house, and shown to our room. The room was nothing but outstanding with a koi pond, a simple modern interior and a fabulous tub that was filled with lotus flowers every night when we went to dinner.

Two of my favorite Aman resorts are located on the tropical island of Bali: Amanusa and Amankila. The resorts have large rooms with expansive ceilings and simple color palettes. Aman tries to use natural local construction materials in an effort to help local craftsmen and retain the local flavor. Our canopy beds were made of coconut husks and the bathroom stone flooring was made from local lava rock. The floor mats were woven locally and the bed textiles were all handmade by villagers. Our rooms had private pools, outdoor showers and private entry gardens with outdoor pavilions to relax and read in. The ultimate in luxury! www.amanresorts.com
