Are You Green Conscious?

May 10, 2008 We read every day that America is going green, that sustainable and recycle are the magic words.  I ask Bev, frequently, are designers and their clients asking about ”green” furniture?  She answers. “Rarely.” And follows that comment with, “It’s more expensive!”

In meetings with reps and designers, I am the only one asking about ”green” furniture.   I am asked at the supermarket if I want paper or plastic.  I never know which is better for the environment.  We are seeing a turn from big SUVs to fuel-efficient cars, but $4.00 gas is a powerful incentive.  Without an SUV, how do you get all that stuff home from Costco?

Is it just the main stream media (MSM) thats driving the “green” movement?

A new study just released rates consumers around the world in green consciousness and the results are surprising.
Americans rank last in a new National Geographic-sponsored survey released Wednesday that compares environmental consumption habits in 14 countries.

The rankings, called "Greendex," are the first to compare the lifestyles and behaviors of consumers in multiple countries...

In general, people in developing countries were more worried about harming the environment than those in developed ones were. They also live in smaller houses, are more likely to consume locally produced food and more likely to get to work by foot, bike or public transportation.
I find the results surprising.  We talk the talk, but don’t walk the walk.
