Share With Groups At Linked in

I quoted Lynni Megginson, owner of L&M Designs in Are You Scared in January and today through an introduction from Susan Dickenson, had a very constructive phone call with a fellow writer for Home Accents Today, her column When Less Is More:,  and owner of a furniture, accessory, fabric and wall paper store.  Both of our stores were honored to be finalists for an ARTS award for Retailer of the Year.

Lynni laid it on the line in her last column when she wrote:

However, if you're like me, looking at holiday sales for the fourth quarter of 2008, the only resolution I can think of would be to fling myself off of the nearest bridge. I don't know about you, but we had the worst holiday season in the history of our business.

And I can pretty much guarantee you that just because it's a new year, if our clients weren't spending during the one time of year when they absolutely had to, the first few months of the year are looking pretty dim for us.

I am not one to talk about how bad it is and financial difficulties we may or may not face.  I am one who doesn't want to sit around telling war stories.  That said, our Decenber was awful, partly due to the large snowstorm in mid-December and an almost complete collapse of sales in January.  We didn't consider Lynni's bridge solution, but we did worry that we could run out of financial resources before the economy turned around.

I prefer to associate with winners amd pick up on ideas that are working for them.  I asked Bev if she could benefit from a group that shared problems and suggested solutions.  She asked if it was over the internet and said she didn't have time to do anything but call on interior designers and help with their questions, deal with vendors and take care of her showroom.

That's why in this blog I have commented on new ideas for additional sales, the positive side of what's happening in the economy and the social networking that seems to be changing the traditional way of meeting the consumer's needs.  I've written about what's working for us and what we are doing to get more business.

If you want to share your misery and seek solutions.  If you just want to talk with other retailers, because they understand what you are going through, then check out the Groups on Linked in.  The groups can have discussions on any subject that is of interest to its members.  We are members of ASID, IIDA, Home Furnishings Industry Professionals
, Interior Design and Social Networking for Furniture Retailers, Manufacturers and Suppliers.  We even started our own group for the Oregon area:  Landfair Furniture + Design Gallery for Designers.

Lynni and I are there for you and are more than willing to offer suggestions or refer you to others with more experience, but we are also just like you and going through the same kind of pain that you are.  We have our fears and down moments.

Agree, Mike - I've found a lot of good info and sources in the LinkedIn groups Home Furnishings Industry Professionals, Interior Design and Social Networking for Furniture Retailers, Manufacturers and Suppliers. Also a good place just to run an idea or two by people in the industry.

I'm advising all my consultilng clients in retail furniture to get themseleves closer to the point of contact with the consumer. Owners and managers must control the point of contact more now than ever. Go face-to-face with every consumer you can. sharpen everyone's interactive skills, and make sure your strategic sales message is delivered to every customer every time, and that each salesperson is doing what you would do to close the sale. If you don't have a standard strategic selling method - get one now! And, remember, unlike the football team coaches, you can actually play the game with your players. I advise you to do it. Lynni Megginson is also successful in overcharging clients and not refunding fees. It took her over 7 months to not even complete a project I hired her to do, and I (like a fool) overpaid her. When we wrote and called to ask for our money back, we never heard a thing. She is dishonest, disorganized, and not what she appears to be.
