Defeating "Overwhelm"
September 21, 2007

I recently met Nika Stewart, a Designer’s Success Coach, who believes that designers get overwhelmed with their business …the economy, the housing market, our families, our own homes, the demands of our clients, backordered and discontinued fabrics...

It isn’t just designers that get overwhelmed.  Many times we feel guilt for thinking we should be able to handle all the competing time demands.  Other times, we know we need a break, but think we are indispensible or just can’t, for fear of not making the “nut.”

I’m here to tell you that you can and must take some down time.  We recently took off for the beach on Bev’s birthday.  First, she participated in a charity best-ball golf tournament on Friday.  Then, she asked her sister to take the shop on Saturday and we left at 11:00 AM for the beach.

We rented a cabin that had a kitchen, a master bedroom and bath, two flat screen TVs, an outdoor private sauna and hot tub.  Saturday night we sat in the hot tub, under the stars, after a wonderful dinner at the Treasure Café at 92 Rorvik Street - map in Wheeler, Oregon.  Don’t just drop by, you’ll need reservations, 503.368.7740, it is so good.  Bev then celebrated her birthday on Sunday with her family, pizza and beer.   Monday, she awoke relaxed, rested and eager to get back to helping designers and their clients.

Stewart has some suggestions for defeating that “overwhelm.”  You can read them at our other blog.  One of her suggestions is to write down your goals for your business and your life.  Then place the list in various places so you see them often.  Stewart says you will find yourself making choices that automatically or magically move you toward your goals.

It is amazing what your subconscious will come up with as you shower or enjoy your life.

Share your ideas on defeating the overwhelm, as Stewart calls it.  Email me at landfair3554@comcast.net
