Emergency Supplies Before The Storm
August 17, 2007
The first named Hurricane of the season looks to be headed for the U.S., Hurricane Dean. Weather experts are estimating Dean will pass almost directly over Jamaica between this Saturday at 8:00 PM and Sunday at 8:00 PM. By 8:00 PM Tuesday it will be in the Gulf of Mexico. Many are worried that Dean, with maximum sustained winds now of 100 mph, will become a category 4 or 5 early next week. Once in the Gulf, all coast line is vulnerable from the Mexico/Texas border clear across to Florida. It just depends on the prevailing winds at the time.
On August 9th, I wrote about Coping With Disaster, How do you get your business back on its feet after a big storm, earthquake, flood or tornado? There are some answers in that post provided by people who have experience.
I want you to be safe. I encourage you to read the blog Cheese-on-bread! Bajegirl, from Barbados, is in the path of Hurricane Dean. She posted her emergency supply list to help you and your family survive this rough patch. Some suggest a three-day cache, other suggest longer. Preparation is the important message. Here are some Bajegirl suggestions that stood out for me:
Water, enough to last 2 weeks
Foods that do not require cooking:
Canned or salted fish and meat
Packaged oats
Biscuits and crackers
Condensed or powdered milk
Canned soups and vegetables
Cereals
Coffee, Tea.
Flour, Rice, Cornmeal, Sugar and Salt
Bleach and other cleaners
Diarrhea medication
Can opener
Mosquito repellent
She goes on to list:
General preparation tips
Preparation before the storm
What to do during the storm
Actions to take after the storm
The main thing to remember is the Boy Scout motto: Be Prepared!
UPDATE:
While I was researching storm preparations, I came across the blog Not Quite June Cleaver.
NQJC is a "wife, mother, gardener, writer, teacher, baker, butcher, candlestick maker! She has owned and operated a successful soapmaking business and has one self published cookbook, Christmas Traditions, and one soapmaking manual, Soapmaking 101, to her credit." She lives in Louisiana and wrote today about her preparations for Hurricane Dean. She knows from experience after Hurricane Rita tpassed just west of her the same year as Katrina.
I was also interested to see that she just signed a deal to provide a special line of products for MaryJanesFarm, a company headquartered in Idaho, that sells accessories nationwide; "simple solutions for everyday organic.". NQJC will have to share with me if the blog helped her business in some way.
