LEDs Are The FutureDecember 18, 2007Bob & Sara down the street decorated their home's ridge line with green and red lights and then hung a wreath on the front porch lighted with LEDs. The lights on the ridge are the ordinary kind of lights that look slightly fuzzy in the night air. The brightness and sharpness of the wreath is head turning. LEDs are changing the face of lighting. Besides red, green and blue, they now come in four shades of white, from a very blue white to a soft warm white. With the advent of white LEDs, we are starting to see interior lighting with these new lights. The big reason they are coming on fast is that they last for 60,000 hours. If you burned a light continuously for 24 hours, the light would last for 2500 days or about 7 years or 42 years if you burned the light for only 4 hours a day. And, they have no mercury hazards if broken like CFLs. A light-emitting diode (LED) is a semiconductor, and when the electric current moves forward, it throws off photons or light and the light is generally red, green or blue. We bought a faux Christmas tree decorated with led lights for the first time this year. Generally, we buy a fresh green tree, take a couple of days to decorate, fight the dryness through the season, worry about it catching fire as it dries out, deal with the needles and then take off the ornaments and lights and haul it outside. This year we have less time than usual. Beverly said if you want a tree, either you will have to decorate it or we can buy a faux tree with LED lights already on it. The 7 ½ foot tree is beautifully lit and it was easy to set up right out of the box. I bought a pine scented candle to burn in the room with the tree. ![]() Speaking of candles and LEDs, the Goodyblog featured Candela Demi-Glow lights by Vessel. They use long-lasting LED technology to mimic the soft glow of candles. And that carrying case is actually a charger. ![]() The next best thing about the light is that they are kid-safe and fire-safe. Guess whose wife is getting a set for Christmas? Vessel sells a set of four for $69.00 plus UPS shipping! Thoughts??? Email them to me at landfair3554@comcast.net Posted by Mike Landfair on December 18, 2007 | Comments (0)
