Electric Wallpaper

January 1, 2010

Some want us to shiver in our boots over the arrival of 2012.  You may have seen the movie "2012" in which the earth is hit by solar flares.  Then the Mayan calendar is supposed to end on 12-21-2012 as we cross Xibalba, but I have great news.  Thanks to a company in Wales, in 2012, we maybe reading our newspapers and books by light from our wallpaper.

Lomox, a company based in Wales in the United Kingdom, is developing the first glowing wall that will discard the need for lighting fixtures through the use of light-emitting wallpaper. The new technology involves applying a special chemical coating to wallpaper and adding a small electrical current to produce light evenly throughout a room. Dimmer switches can be installed to control brightness, and the company claims the light walls will eliminate shadows that lamps produce.

We had just a tease about this technology in April of 2008 when I posted "Is Your Wallpaper Running?"  The story did not divulge the producer or how it worked, just that it was going to be introduced in the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan.  Now we have this from eLightbulbs.com:

The wallpaper uses a chemical coating to produce a glow that mimics natural sunlight, without the glare of a conventional light bulb. Like a traditional lighting source, the brightness of the paper can be controlled by a dimmer switch.

The coating uses LEDs, but the UK Times reports that it is two and a half times more efficient than energy-saving light bulbs powered by the same technology.
I am so looking forward to 2012!
