What's In Your Wallet For Mother's Day?

April 24, 2008

The headline is scary and feeds into all those fears we have about the economy: Survey: Consumers will spend less on mom this year.

Digging into the story, I don’t see much to be concerned about.  The National Retail Federation estimates a 0.37 percent slip in spending on Mothers on Mother’s Day.  That means if you spent $100 on your mom last year, you are likely to only spend $99.63 this year.  Give me a break!

What the headline should read is that Moms will get the same amount spent on them this year as last.  And how much nationwide will we spend this year?  $15.80 Billion down from $15.86 Billion.

The Orlando Business Journal writes "Gas prices and other economic issues will still be at the forefront of people's minds as they shop around for the perfect gift for mom."  No they won’t.  Sure we might mention the high gas prices over brunch, but the miserably cold weather that continues to hang on is really uppermost in our minds.  We are not going to “diss” our moms by scrimping on her day.

I plan to honor my step-mom with breakfast in our home (|last year we stopped by with a plant) and have breakfast with Bev’s mom and all her family along with my mom at a Salem country club.  I’m sure we’ll not forget the plants and Mother’s Day cards.
