Yellow: The Next Trendy Shade

July 17, 2008

Beverly and I went shopping for yellow nail polish.  I asked, “Do they make nail polish in yellow?” Yes, I was told it’s the new color.  That night Bev propped her feet up and painted them this new color while we watched “60 Minutes.”

A little research on my part revealed the January 2008 issue of Oprah magazine, quotes Leatrice Eiseman, author of" More Alive with Color" and Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute, as saying yellow would be the next trendy shade.

The Budget Fashionista has a picture of Rhianna, an early adopter, sporting yellow nails:

What is the significance of yellow?  I’ve seen many colors on nails, feed and hands, but never yellow.  I’m wondering if the coming on of yellow reflects a need for bright and sunny to counteract the doom and gloom we get from the major news media.

Yellow is the feng shui color of sunlight, cheerful and uplifting.  Yellow creates a cozy, welcoming feeling.  “Yellow is an excellent feng shui choice for the children's rooms, as well as the family room.”

Color researchers use the color yellow to increase self-esteem and strengthen one’s overall feeling of well-being.

I’m also wondering if it has something to do with the ultimate yellow metal, gold.  I posted recently that It’s Time To Smarten Up!   It’s time to own gold and silver to hedge against the financial risks that have become part of our daily lives.  I thought it curious that depositors of Indymac, the second largest bank failure in the history of the U.S., stood for hours outside the bank to take back their dollar denominated assets.  They were given cashiers checks to take to another bank, yet it’s the dollar that’s at risk.  In the last six years the dollar is down 50% versus gold and down significantly versus the Euro since 2000, when Bev and I went to Italy to celebrate her 50th birthday.

As a retailer, I might bring more yellow accessories into my store.  I might paint a wall yellow.  I might suggest my sales staff wear yellow.  For my protection I might buy some gold.  I might paint my toenails yellow.  Nah, for me that’s going too far.
