The Casino and Mesa Grill

July 28, 2008

Last night we took the monorail from the Hilton Grand Adventure, where we are staying here in Las Vegas, to Caesars Palace for dinner at Bobbie Flay's Mesa Grill.  Before dining we stopped at electronic Roulette.  Frank, a friend of ours from the dog park, gave me $10 before we left, and said bet it on odd or even, red or black.  He then told me about a trip to a casino just after World II.  He and his buddies were pretty much down on their luck when they started to play roulette.  He was betting odd or even, or red or black.

Frank had won seven straight times each time doubling the money he bet.  He had drawn a crowd and before bets were closed, a big bear of a man from another table, came over, placed a large pile of chips on Frank's choice and for the eighth time in a row Frank was a winner.  They all picked up their chips and left the table.  I followed Frank's advice.  Initially, I lost and Frank's $10 shrunk to $2.50, but then I started to win and when I pulled my chips off the table, Frank's $10 had become $20.  Frank who is soon to be 82 will be happy.

The Mesa Grill is an oasis on the casino floor.  It was packed on this Sunday night.  We had reservations for 8:30 and while we were standing there waiting to be seated, walk-ins were told it would be an hour and half wait.  I heard that business is down in Las vegas casinos and restaurants, because it is much more expensive for Californians to drive.  The staff at Mesa Grill was verfy happy that Bobby Flay was driving attendance by virtue of his TV show and cookbooks.

When you walk into Mesa Grill, the first thing you notice is the slatted, curved-wood, dropped ceiling and the windows made of floor to ceiling colored solid glass in green, blue, yellow and orange.  Across the room above the kitchen are rows and rows of two foot tall glass bottles in colors that match the window walls, lit from behind.  In between the glass walls are what look like steel panels that are somewhat industrial.  One of the panels has a rusted texture, but in blue and orange.

But the food is the draw,  We started with:

YUCATAN CHICKEN TACOS, Grilled Red Onion + Peanut-Smoked Chile Barbeque Sauce
ROASTED BEETS + TEXAS RUBY RED GRAPEFRUIT SALAD Toasted Walnuts, Feta Cheese + Spicy Tangerine Dressing

Then Bev ordered
ANCHO CHILE-HONEY GLAZED SALMON Spicy Black Bean Sauce + Roasted Jalapeno Crema
and I ordered:
GRILLED MAHI MAHI Roasted Pineapple-Cascabel Chile Sauce + Caramelized Pineapple-Green Onion Salsa

We gave the meal a ten+ and recommend it highly.  There were just so many interesting flavors and the contrast between hot and spicy and sweet, was very satisfying.  Definitely a reason to sneak away from furniture and accessories.

Monday we go to Buildings A, B and the new Building C.
