Costa Mesa, Calif. -- Birtcher Development and Investments has sold its Costa Mesa South Coast Home Furnishings Centre for over $100 million to South Coast Home Furnishings Center LLC. The home shopping center, developed by Birtcher and Buchanan Street Partners, is 93% leased with new tenants including Hawaii-based C.S. Wo & Sons, La-Z-Boy, Wickes Furniture and L.A. Carpet.
Denver, Co. -- HW HOME's store launch of Cisco Brothers' eco-friendly, sustainable Basal Living collection kicked off Aug.22nd. Basal Living, featuring the furniture maker's Inside Green construction will be carried at HW HOME's Boulder, Denver and Broomfield locations. The collection is made from sustainable hardwood frames, uses non-toxic water-based glues, and is upholstered with organic cotton, wool, linen and hemp fabrics. Cushions are made of hypoallergenic wool fibers with completely biodegradable natural latex foam and, instead of a metal spring system, the seating incorporates a combination of hemp webbing, jute and burlap.
Raleigh, N.C. -- Porto, a fine home furnishings and accessories store with locations in Raleigh and Chapel Hill, N.C. has become a founding member of the Sustainable Furniture Council and the only furniture store in the state to be accredited by the organization thus far. Porto has been a South Cone retailer since the store opened in North Hills two years ago, when owners Emily Barrett and Michael Perry made it a standard business practice to carry only those manufacturers who practice environmental stewardship.

Boerne, Texas -- Home furnishings retailer Melissa Haberstroh, owner of The Burlap Horse in Boerne, Texas, was recently named to AmericasMart’s Gift and Home Furnishings Advisory Board. Haberstroh, one of three retailers selected from across the country for the two-year appointment, was chosen based on her record as an accomplished retailer and for her national involvement and leadership in the retail industry.
Charlotte, N.C. -- John Belk, former CEO of Belk Inc. and a former mayor of Charlotte, died August 17th at age 87. The privately-owned Charlotte-based retail chain of more than 300 stores is now led by Tim Belk as chairman and CEO.
Fort Worth, Tx. -- Pier 1 Imports terminated marketing executive Phil Schneider, who had worked in the advertising and marketing department since 1988. The company is searching for a replacement. Pier 1 named Sharon Leite, formerly with Bath & Body Works, Gap Inc., Limited Stores and Walt Disney Co. as its new executive vice president of stores.
Canoga Park, Calif. -- Yavar Rafieha, vice president of marketing and sales at Abbyson Corp. announced that Hrach Boyajian has been named the new marketing and sales manager. Abbyson recently completed the successful launch of its new 8,000-sq.-ft. retail operation, The Power of Home, in the San Fernando Valley.
Nashville, Tenn. -- Jean-Rene Gougelet was named president of Burnes Home Accents, a division of C.R. Gibson. Gougelet will oversee sales, marketing and operations for both the Burnes and Connoisseur brands.
Restoration Hardware announced Aug. 14 it is eliminating approx. 100 positions at its corporate headquarters. President & CEO Gary Friedman attributes the job cuts to challenging market conditions in the home furnishings sector. The move is expected to save the company about $9 million annually.
