March 17, 2008
Wal-Mart has launched its new Canopy home furnishings brand with products already in select stores nationwide and online at www.walmart.com/canopy. The Canopy launch will continue with an expansion of product in additional home categories, stores and online through summer and fall. The new home furnishings line will extend across a multitude of home categories, including bedding, furniture, bath accessories, dinnerware, and décor, with prices up to 40 percent below competitors, according to a Wal-Mart press release. The retailer is also continuing the expansion of a new Home layout that features merchandise offerings organized by rooms, more visible signing, and merchandise presentation that clearly shows the depth, breadth and coordination of product. Wal-Mart and Meredith Corporation will launch a new line of Better Homes and Gardens products in Fall 2008.

Galveston Historical Foundation will host “Home Furnishings and Fabrics Before and After the Storm,” March 18 at Galveston’s oldest residential dwelling, the Michel B. Menard House. The free lecture will concentrate on how Galveston’s elegant pre-Great Storm interiors changed during the rebuilding efforts that came in the aftermath of the worst natural disaster in U.S. history. Richard Slavin, the speaker, is a decorative arts consultant who specializes in period interiors, textiles, wallpapers and furnishings and is the author of many articles on textiles as well as the book Opulent Textiles: The Schumacher Collection. The venue for the event is the Michel B. Menard House, Galveston’s oldest surviving residential dwelling, recognized by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as one of the finest examples of historic preservation in the United States. The event begins at 5:30 with a reception. The lecture begins promptly at 6 p.m. Because seating is limited, reservations are required. Call (409) 762-3933 to secure a place.
