Run, Thompson, Run!

November 10, 2009

Yes, that’s Thompson Lange of Homescapes Carmel in the photo at right looking more than a little out of sorts, but fortunately his expression has nothing to do with sales numbers. Thompson, who is as passionate about running as he is about retailing, was asked to pose for California muralist John Cerney’s commission to paint new mile markers for next year’s 25th anniversary of the Big Sur International Marathon.

Thompson has the honor of “being” Mile Marker #1 which depicts him in true form – an eager marathoner who, the night before, retires in his running gear so he can hit the ground running on race morning but, upon waking up, is horrified to find that he’s overslept!

After posing for Mile Marker #1 late last month (the completed version shown at bottom right) Thompson left for Athens where he just completed another leg of his quest to “run around the world.” From his blog, thearmchairtraveler.com: Thompson Lange Homescapes Carmel - Mile Marker 1 - John Cerney

Yup, that’s right folks… I’m off to Marathon to run a marathon.  And thank god and Frequent Flier miles, by this time two weeks from now (Nov. 8) I’ll be lifting a frothy Athenian and yelling “Yiamas!” (A frothy Athenian is a beer, by the way - as opposed to a sweaty Carmelite, which would be me.)

Business, meanwhile, is going well for Thompson, brother Beau and the rest of the Homescapes crew whom, you may recall, opened a garden shop earlier this year. This morning, from an Internet café in Turkey, Thompson shared the results of that business venture as well as some surprising new plans with me. Look for his and several other retailers’ take on this recessionary year, and how they feel heading into 2010, in December's Retailer Insight feature.
