Kohl's giving away $10 million to 20 schools in Facebook contest

July 7, 2010
July 7th through September 3rd, kids and parents can visit Kohl's Facebook page and enter their schools in a contest to win $500,000. The department store chain is giving away a total of $10 million to 20 schools this year in recognition of the 10th anniversary of its Kohl's Cares philanthropic program that supports children's health and education.

As kids are getting ready for the new school year, Kohl's wants to inspire students and school supporters to dream big about what their favorite kindergarten to 12th grade (K-12) school could do with half a million dollars - whether it's starting an art program, creating a new computer lab or saving a music program.
During the contest, Kohl's Facebook fans can vote for public or private schools that serve K-12 students by visiting www.facebook.com/kohls. Fans can submit their ideas for what the school could do with half a million dollars and vote up to 20 times for their favorite elementary, middle or high schools. The top 20 vote-getting schools, that meet contest criteria as outlined in the Official Rules and have school officials provide information on how the school will use the money to support educational programs or initiatives, will win $500,000 each. Winning schools will be announced in late September.
The $10 million donation comes from the Kohl's Cares cause merchandise program, which sells special merchandise, including plush toys and books, and donates 100% of the net profit to benefit children's health and education initiatives nationwide. Over the past 10 years, the program has raised more than $150 million for children's initiatives. Kohl's philanthropic programs also include a scholarship program that has awarded more than $2.2 million in scholarships and prizes and will donate an additional $410,000 to kids this year, Kohl's associate volunteer program that donated more than $10 million to nonprofits nationwide last year alone, and a fundraising gift card program.
See Official Rules at www.facebook.com/kohls for all program and prizing details. For more information on Kohl's philanthropic efforts, visit www.kohls.com/cares.
Kohl's is number 9 on Home Accents Today's 2009 list of the Top 50 Home Accent Retailers (by sales volume), with annual home accent sales of approximately $870 million. The 2010 Top 50 list will publish in the August, 2010 issue of Home Accents Today.

No, you didn't and neither did I. I was tgauht who he was by Thomas Sowell. It was in one of his columns many years ago. There's a small blurb on wikipedia but you'd think that if you wanted a hero to the black community, James Armistead would have his national day along side MLK. But since it doesn't promote the America torn by racial hatred template, sadly many kids who could use a true American hero will never hear of him.

I am the librarian at H.T. Jaramillo in Belen, New Mexico, we are a enter city school. With very poor families that have their student attend our school. This school has been around since 1951, our principal is the granddaughter of the school. She is a very dedicated woman not afraid to get her hands dirty. She will do everything that our teachers do. Our teachers are the best in the state in my opinion. So the reason why I think our school should be chosen is not for our teachers its for our students. Our budget has been cut to zero. This means no supplies, books for our library, no new technology. With this thought it means our students are doing without and they are the future of our nation. Like so many other school's that had to cut teachers jobs , we where able to have everyone keep their job. The district had all but one school close this summer and had all principals work at one school to cut the cost in utilities. This is how dedicated our district is. To use what money we have for our students and to keep what great teachers we have. I really hope that you choose us not for the glory of being picked but for the future of our children. Thank you.

I would like to nominate Capital Day School in Frankfort, Ky. My grandchildren attend the school and has received an excellent education. The teacher to student ratio is small and the teachers are dedicated individuals. They could teach in other schools and receive higher pay. They spend extra hours teaching the students to excel in all subjects. They spend numerous hours in quick recall, Governors Scholars, annual talent reviews and sports. They need the money to assist in building a new school. They have a small multifunctional room which serves as a cafeteria, programs, parents meetings, etc. They really need to build a new school so that they could build a large multipurpose room which could serve as a cafeteria, gym, talent shows, school meetings, graduations, auditoriums, etc. They have to use other school gyms and auditoriums that are sometime over 25 miles away. Please suuport this dedicated teachers, parents and students. Kohl's supports our community in donations and they are greatly appreciated. CAPITAL DAY IS A VERY DESERVING SCHOOL.
