Susan Dickenson

After graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill (BS-Business Admin., 1982), Susan Clinard Dickenson spent 15 years in the Wash., D.C. area, writing and researching for trade associations, lobbyists, a Dept. of Commerce project and Perot Systems, H. Ross Perot's post-EDS venture. After relocating to her native High Point several year ago, she continued a career as a freelancer, writing general interest, business, garden and home items for several publications. Susan joined HAT in July, 2006, and lives in Greensboro where she and husband Tim keep tabs on their four daughters, two of whom are journalism majors at UNC and Notre Dame.

Bed Bath & Beyond partners with Home & More to expand into Mexico

Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. announced the formation of a joint venture with Home & More, S.A. de C.V., a privately-held home products retailer operating in Mexico. As a result of a $4 million investment, Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. becomes a 50% equity holder in a newly formed entity currently operating two stores in Mexico City under the name Home & More, which offer a broad assortment of products for the home. Bed Bath & Beyond recently opened its first international store in Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada, has signed or is in final documentation for approximately a dozen sites in Canada, and is actively negotiating another dozen sites as it looks forward to its expansion throughout the country.

April results for 40 retailers; plus a look at early tax rebate spending

April ’08 same-store sales growth for 40 large retailers improved to 3.7% mainly due to weak year-ago comparison periods according to a report from consulting and market research firm TNS Retail Forward.  April’s result is up from the -0.1% sales-weighted composite reported last month and up from the -1.5% composite reported in April of 2007, which was hurt by an Easter calendar shift.  The list of reporting retailers follows:

Brooke Shields and her family will star in the print and online marketing campaign for Iconix Brand Group's Royal Velvet home brand, to debut next month (June, 2008) in shelter, lifestyle and bridal magazines. The campaign will coincide with the launch of Royal Velvet at Bed, Bath & Beyond. The campaign, themed "Royal Moments" will feature ads with Shields, her husband Chris Henchy and daughters Rowan and Grier.  The campaign was shot at a private estate in Beverly Hills by celebrity photographer Tony Duran.

Linens ‘n Things files voluntary petition under Chapter 11; lists 120 U.S. store closings

Linens ‘n Things announced May 2nd  it has filed a voluntary petition under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. The company also announced that as part of its financial restructuring it plans to close 120 underperforming stores (see list below).  The national home furnishings chain will continue to operate its remaining stores without interruption during the reorganization. The filing pertains only to LNT’s operations in the U.S. The company’s Canadian stores, which are among the strongest performers in the chain, are not included in the filing and there are no plans for a similar filing in Canada.
