Mike Landfair

Mike Landfair is the "unpaid and untitled warehouseman, deluxer and marketing guru" for his wife's business, Landfair Furniture + Design Gallery, a role he assumed following his retirement from a career as a stockbroker. He posts to two blogs, movermike.com and landfairfurniture.blogspot.com, the latter of which he launched in 2005 to boost business at the store. The Landfair Furniture blog's success in serving the local interior design community and retail public has been written up on numerous business blogs, in the Portland Business Journal, and as a success case for a blogging study conducted last year by Northeastern University and Backbone Media. Landfair has a BS in political science and economics, is an avid reader, enjoys writing poetry, and finds abundance, health and joy in the world around him.

Are You Green Conscious?

May 10, 2008 | Link This | Email this | Comments (0)

We read every day that America is going green, that sustainable and recycle are the magic words.  I ask Bev, frequently, are designers and their clients asking about ”green” furniture?  She answers. “Rarely.” And follows that comment with, “It’s more expensive!”

In meetings with reps and designers, I am the only one asking about ”green” furniture.   I am asked at the supermarket if I want paper or plastic.  I never know which is better for the environment.  We are seeing a turn from big SUVs to fuel-efficient cars, but $4.00 gas is a powerful incentive.  Without an SUV, how do you get all that stuff home from Costco?

Is it just the main stream media (MSM) thats driving the “green” movement?

Christopher Lowell's New TV Show

May 8, 2008 | Link This | Email this | Comments (0)

Here’s what caught my eye:  The Doctor of Design, Christopher Lowell, billed by Fine Living Network (FLN) as one of America's most established designers and trusted lifestyle authorities, is premiering a show on TV in July.
Each episode examines today's newsworthy headlines on emerging lifestyle trends and how they profoundly impact the American home in surprising new ways: "Time is quickly eclipsing money, and today's 'upwardly mobile' are now paying for the lifestyle but suddenly have no time to actually enjoy the dream they aspire to," says Lowell.
Among the topics Lowell will discuss are these:

One Coast
reports on the results of an interesting study, Increasing Impulse Buys
The most comprehensive study of impulse purchases was performed in 2002. According to the study, conducted by Leo J. Shapiro and Associates for Marketing Support Inc. of Chicago, almost one-third of all consumers make a sizable impulse purchase every week. The median purchase was reported to be $30. Of specific interest to gift-store retailers, the study found that about 25 percent of impulse purchases are made in specialty stores.

Financial Markets Interconnected

May 5, 2008 | Link This | Email this | Comments (0)

It's amazing how interconnected the financial markets are. Linens ‘N Things was on the hook to GE for a $15 Million payment that was due April 15th!  Linens defaulted and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, which means creditors are frozen in place allowing time for Linens to reorganize without lawsuit impediments.  At the time of the filing,
A GE spokesman confirmed that its Commercial Finance unit is the lead agent on a $700-million revolving credit facility to Linens 'n Things, but declined to comment further.

Just In Time For Mothers' Day

May 2, 2008 | Link This | Email this | Comments (0)

I have been having ant problems.  If I put the used ice cream bowl in the sink without rinsing it or having Ralph the dog lick it clean, before you know it I have little tiny ants signaling their buddies that Mountain Huckleberry is available.

Sometimes, while I type out my latest post for The Landfair Retail Focus, I might be having my morning cereal, my afternoon pizza or a midnight snack.  Invariably, I, and many like me, get crumbs in the keyboard and Cheeto cheese on our mouses (mice?).  I’ve read that the average keyboard harbors 400 times more bacteria than your toilet seat.  Ick! I also have ants in my keyboard.
