Summer Inspiration - Barclay Butera

July 13, 2008 | Link This | Email this | Comments (1)

Describe your idea or memory of the perfect summer place. Has anything about that special place in time provided inspiration for your work?

Throughout my childhood, my parents would take my bother, sister and me to a small oceanside resort in Mexico called Las Cruces, about a half an hour plane ride from Cabo San Lucas. My Dad loved the resort because it didn’t have telephones and televisions, but focused on outdoor games -- croquet, badminton, tennis, volleyball, sport fishing, snorkeling and swimming both in the ocean and in an unheated salt water pool. In the evening, the 30-40 or so resort guests would gather in the game room about an hour before dinner to socialize. It was there we learned how to play backgammon, dominos, pool and different card games. Good conversation, good food and making new friends of all ages were part of each day’s exper...Read More

Retail Stories - Barclay Butera

June 10, 2008 | Link This | Email this | Comments (0)

The last time you shopped for home décor item(s), what did you buy? Where did you buy it? And what attracted you to that particular shop?

Barclay Butera: Shopping is my vice and addiction. I feel that to be a great retailer, you must keep an eye on the other great retailers in the country. With my travel schedule, I have the opportunity to explore many cities every month; last month included Chicago, Atlanta and New York. I would say that Charlotte Moss’s Townhouse on New York’s Upper East Side has been one of

Designers on Design: best things, concepts, places of 2007-Barclay Butera

December 12, 2007 | Link This | Email this | Comments (0)

New York has inspired me this year! I’ve been here almost every week and so I was able – for the first time in my life – to really explore not as a tourist, but as a local. I found a great local tailor and fantastic neighborhood bars and restaurants. I’ve been able to see, over a couple summers in the Hamptons, why locals go there for fun and what they do day in/day out. And I really feel the vast congregation of cultures and styles in ...Read More

Green expectations -- is "green" here to stay?

October 15, 2007 | Link This | Email this | Comments (0)

Being conscious of the environment and striving for more sustainability – both at work and in our homes – is no trend, it’s here to stay. In my company, we are incorporating more energy-saving techniques, such as cutting our light and power usage in my corporate offices, central warehouse and manufacturing facility.

I have also focused on alternate materials and processes in manufacturing, including water-based stains, wood glue with no off-gassing, using pure alder wood from replanted forests with no chemical processing. In fabric development ...Read More

Yuck at first sight...

August 23, 2007 | Link This | Email this | Comments (0)

My approach to showrooms involves creating an inviting ambiance by engaging all the senses. Appropriate music is a must; so is using candles and adding a touch of fragrance to the room. This combination is disarming and relaxing for the client. One thing I really don’t like is dried floral arrangements. They don’t appeal to any of the senses and they make the room look worn and dated. Another absolute is having approachable staff. They should be friendly and welcoming, and not just stare at the client when he or she enters the store. --Barclay Butera
