Paul Thompson has been involved in the merchandising of home and giftware products for over 15 years, holding key positions at Pfaltzgraff and Department 56 before joining OneCoast in 2004. As creative vice president at OneCoast, Thompson oversees the merchandising of the company's showrooms around the country and monitors industry trends. He is recognized as an industry leader, and is a frequent speaker at industry events.  Thompson is a member of the Board of Directors for Gift for Life, the leading charitable organization within the gift industry, raising funds for Amfar. Describe your idea or memory of the perfect summer place. Has anything about that special place in time provided inspiration for your work?

When I first moved to New York, I was traveling out to East Hampton to enjoy lots of dinner parties and good food as the NYC social scene moved east for the summer. Many times I’d go out to houses early in the season to redecorate for my friends. I learned as much about people and human nature those summers as I did about interior spaces. Years later when I was independently consulting with retailers, I was well prepared, to say the least.

2008 is an election year, which brings with it a sense of hope and pride. I for one am energized by the promise of a new era. Look for red, a color associated with energy, power and passion, and blue, a symbol of loyalty, intelligence and stability. Yellow is an obvious choice as an accent color. It signifies hope and joy and offers a lighthearted alternative. --Paul Thompson

1) When I began the complete renovation of my apartment this summer, I started with the kitchen. Even though any renovation can be a headache, I was thrilled to finally find the refrigerator of my dreams!  The Leibherr Model #CS1350 is tall, thin (with plenty of room) and has an ice maker to boot. (See picture at http://www.leibherr-appliances.com/products_cs1350.htm ). It is priced at less than Sub Zero, more than Maytag, but for style and function, it was worth every penny!

Welcome me, even in a small way - When I get that welcoming hello from a store employee, even if they’re busy with another customer or project, I love it.

 

I like to shop a store that looks like it is going into business, not out of business. I really dislike sidewalk sales, although I know they may be a necessary evil for some stores during certain seasons. And if the store’s “On Sale” section is up front – keep it neat, don’t cram product together, and be helpful!
