Obama, Clinton or McCain? Which candidate would you prefer as a White House client & what would you do?

April 19, 2008 | Link This | Email this | Comments (0)

I asked our design panelists to imagine: it's 3 a.m. on Jan. 21, 2009, the phone rings, and the call is from 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. The new president is inviting you to oversee a redecoration of the White House, including a complete makeover of the First Family’s private living quarters. Political preferences aside, which candidate would you most like to have as a client, and what would you do? Their responses appear here, and in our March 2008 issue. --Susan Dickenson

I think the Obamas would best be suited for a radical (albeit tasteful) redo of the White House. He seems to truly be up for "cleaning house.” Most of the building is a museum, with many matronly period pieces and design styles. While very appropriate for a national building, I th...Read More

Design Forecast for 2008-Mark Schomisch

Metallics. And I'm a big fan. It's like the 80s all over again! Great textured golds and coppers... so much more depth and character than the mind-numbing wave of "everything has to be chrome" that seemed to be the mantra a couple years back. I'm big into brass right now for hardware and fixtures, albeit in an elegant satin finish. I think the trend is re-emerging from the desire to have a little splash of extravagance brought back into interior work. Like anything else, it has to be tempered -- a little goes a long way. In the wrong hands it's like any other design element... we've all been to Vegas. You're seeing some metallics (or will be shortly) in some really amazing places: ceramics, kitchen appliances, wallcoverings, etc...Read More

Designers on Design: best things, concepts, places of 2007-Mark Schomisch

I thought back on '07 for a second (maybe two). Restaurant design in Los Angeles is an interesting animal. It seems to me to always be completely on, or completely off...no middle ground. I don't know why that is. I always feel there is a very delicate balance between interior (restaurant) design and the product itself (my dinner). One shouldn't outshine the other. They should compliment each other...like a nice wine. I'm sitting here typing before dinner. Can you tell?  Gonna have to go with the recently renovated Tower Bar at the Sunset Tower Hotel on Sunset Blvd. This place simply makes me feel good. Not just because of the (beautiful) full bar...but the fact ...Read More

Yuck at first sight...

August 20, 2007 | Link This | Email this | Comments (0)

I'd have to say my biggest peeve is the presentation of furniture in a safe, homogenized fashion. Sure, that chair looks great alongside the matching sofa, but what if I decide to throw it a curve? Bring in a completely unorthodox piece? Mix it up... make me think about it! Let me see what makes that chair look unique. And don't try to blow me away with the latest "spirited colors"...they're oftentimes just plain distracting and they're not going to save a piece that didn't have the style to begin with. --Mark Schomisch
