Summer Inspiration - Randy Ouzts

July 12, 2008 | Link This | Email this | Comments (0)

Describe your idea or memory of the perfect summer place. Has anything about that special place in time provided inspiration for your work?

The warm Sunday afternoons spent sitting under my grandparents’ pecan trees, drinking sweet tea and talking about life are some of my fondest memories. Being advised to travel as much as possible, “see the world, experience life.” Looking out over the garden from the pecan orchard made me appreciate how gratifying it is to experience the whole cycle, from beginning to end, spring to fall, of something planted as a seedling. I also think this way of life was the real opening for my career. Staying true to what I believe makes me better at what I do to this day. I sometimes find myself wondering how my grandmother would answer one of my gardening questions, in her easy, honest dialogue. They were green and d...Read More

Retail Stories - Randy Ouzts

The last time you shopped for home decor item(s) for your home, what did you buy? Where did you buy it? And what attracted you to that particular shop?

Randy Ouzts: I’ve been doing some remodeling, adding a bedroom/new bathroom, and I shopped at Home Depot Design Center for tub, sinks, mirrors and shower fixtures. Flooring came from a designer who takes old wood and makes floors. Paints are from Farrow and Ball. Everything else came from small specialty stores. I believe this is the time for small specialty stores if they can survive this rough period. Shoppers want special looks and treatment from the stores they support. Excellent customer service will keep them coming back. I speak from experience. You have to give great service and quality products 24/7. Otherwise they can get it anywhere.

Obama, Clinton or McCain? Which candidate would you prefer as a White House client & what would you do?

March 18, 2008 | Link This | Email this | Comments (0)

I would like to redo the White House with Michelle and Barack Obama. Their youth, style and freshness would make the White House seem less dated. I would change the White House to be younger in style but not lose the great history that has made us a great country. I’d suggest including the great American furniture designers with the style we are about -- color, freshness and easy living, opening the gardens of the White House with works of American sculpture, designing green gardens. Our White House could become the best example of organic and green living. I also believe the White House should display our great adaptable lifestyles and love of design. The more I travel, the more I realize that American design dictates how most of the world lives as far as style and taste. I love history but I believe we are making it every day in what we design...Read More

Design Forecast for 2008-Randy Ouzts

January 10, 2008 | Link This | Email this | Comments (0)

Black and green are gaining strength. The trends are again European-influenced, mixing traditional with a cleaner twist. There’s so much of the same out there. I think the consumer is looking for more specialization in design rather than off-the-rack merchandise, and is willing to pay more for better quality. I also see garden, indoors and out, becoming a very important part of all-year buying. --Randy Ouzts
