Ethan Allen takes Pinnacle honor

Winners announced in 15 categories at annual event

Horizons by EthanAllen took the top honors among major collections at the 2008 Pinnacle Awards gala, which saluted winners of the American Society of Furniture Designers’ annual contest.

Winners were announced in 15 categories at the event, which took place Monday, Oct. 20, during High Point Market week and was hosted by HGTV’s Nancy Glass and Furniture/Today’s Ray Allegrezza.

New Horizons was designed for Ethan Allen by Paul Rosebrock and Craig Stout. Pinnacle judges praised its “classic clean lines, style, and substance. A cohesive collection with thoughtful contrast in texture and finish that represents today’s lifestyle.”

Other categories and winners, along with judges’ comments, were:

Bedroom: Lexington Home Brands, Zacara Collection, designed by Troy Hollis. “We found the collection clean lined and understated. The use of fabric in the headboard was ingenious.”

Casual dining: The Phillips Collection, Origins Tables, by Nuttapon Potaton. “The Origins Table Collection redefines the category. It has an exotic look and makes an eco-friendly statement.”

Home entertainment: Aspenhome, Adagio, by Ken Levi and Andy Nielson. Judges noted the sculptural quality, richness of materials and thoughtful modern lines.

Formal dining: Scott Thomas, New Vienna, by Scott Hamed. “New Vienna projects a rich look, a new traditionalism with exquisite elements of formality. Its unique environmental finish was a winner.”

Home office: Maitland-Smith, Map Desk, by Glenn Yelvington. “This beautiful piece celebrates the craft of inlay. A remarkable piece of work in today’s world.”

Juvenile: Q Collection, Jr. Stella Stackables, by Jonsara Ruth. “An eco-friendly, all-natural design with a fresh sassy look. The Stackables engaged us all, and appeal not only to a children’s market.”

Leather upholstery: Century Furniture, Stilletto Chair, by Joe Mallinson. “We loved it! Rock star presence.”

Motion upholstery: American Leather, Spinnaker, by Louis Lara. “This piece was futuristic with dynamic form and beautiful lines. Stunning to see such absolute function and elegance in a recliner.”

Occasional tables: Ethan Allen, Wire Form Table, by Paul Rosebrock and Craig Stout. Judges responded to the contrast in metal and glass, beautiful scale and proportion, and stellar execution.

Stationary upholstery: Martha Stewart Living by Bernhardt, Cadden Cutaway, by Marissa Brown, Paul Galli and Jason Culler. “The use of materials and textures was clean and graceful, with an absolutely timeless appeal.”

Occasional storage: Brastilo, Six-Drawer Console, by Katie Hatch. “Incredible. Achieves a lightness that belies such a heavy piece. A substantial value for an eco -friendly product.”

Summer/casual: Selamat, Stratus, by Jarrod Lim. “Uncommonly clean and forward thinking, with a nod to mid-century modern.

Accessories: The Phillips Collection, River Rock Planters, by Jason Phillips. “Done in a grand scale. Earthy and serene.” Judges loved the Zen quality and excellent use of materials.

Lighting: Hubbardton Forge, Dyad Lamps, by David Martin, Charles Camacho and George Chandler. “This collection exhibited strong architectural style softened by relevant materials.”

Volunteering as judges for the Pinnacles were Richard Bennington, High Point University; Steve Walker, North Carolina State University; Max Shangle, Kendall College; Julie Smith, Furniture Style; Jo Fleisher, Home Furnishings Business; Terry Allen, industry expert; Daren Koenig, City Furniture; Rhonda Wolf, Havertys; Judith Cushman Hammer, University of North Carolina at Greensboro; and Jackie Hirschhaut, American Home Furnishings Alliance.
