Bombay Company to close all U.S. stores
By Clint Engel -- Home Accents Today,10/15/2007

The Bombay Company said it will liquidate all its U.S. stores but keep the Canadian units open under an auction deal that seeks bankruptcy court approval this week.
The Fort Worth, Texas-based company, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Sept. 20, did not say in a statement how much the debtor would receive under the winning bid, which involves liquidators Hilco Merchant Resources and Gordon Bros., and Canadian furniture, housewares and gifts retailer Bowring and Benix & Co.
Bombay said it will submit the agreement for U.S. Bankruptcy Court approval early this week and expects to begin store closings this week, too.
Its other assets, including U.S. intellectual property rights and real estate assets, are not part of the proposed deal, the retailer said.
Bombay sells online and through 384 stores. According to Furniture/Today’s latest Top 100 — when it the company 441 stores as of Feb. 3 — 57 of those units were in Canada.
“This is a difficult day for Bombay in the United States, but we are glad that we have found a solution that will help provide most of our U.S. employees with continued work through the all-important holiday season, while also preserving the Bombay name and continuing the company’s successful Canadian operations,” Bombay CEO David Stewart said in the release.
He thanked the company’s employees “who have remained committed to serving our loyal customers during these most difficult days.”
Fred Benitah, CEO of Bowring and Benix, said Bombay is “one of the most respected retail brands in Canada, and the acquisition of Bombay Canada complements our existing Bowring and Benix brands, strengthening our position as Canada’s leading home retailers.”

If you're trying to contact The Bombay Company, I'd start with the new owners of Bombay Brands LLC -- Hilco. Here's their website: www.hilcocc.com/contact/index.asp

I first began shopping with Bombay when I saw a small advert in The New Yorker magazine. They sent me line drawing leaflet in response to my call. I bought a leather-topped wine table for $19 – quite a sum for a 20-year-old earning little more than $100 a week and trying to furnish an apartment. I still have that table, as well as a house full of tables, cabinets, decorative accessories, and framed artwork. Yes, the furniture was semi-flat pack but the finishes on my furniture was – and is – excellent quality. Tastes change, shopping habits change, corporations change their direction and sometimes lose their focus. I’m sorry Bombay has closed but I still have all that lovely furniture enhancing my home.

Wow, I was not aware that the Bombay store are no longer in business. A year ago my brother purchased his new home. My house warming gift, was to decorated his living and Florida.I pchased several pieces from Bombay, including four Bar Stool that were originally $500 and I paid 249. "very happy" I now finished my kitchen and added an Island. I needed 2 bar stools and Bombay immediatly came to mind. This is when I found out that the Bombay stores are no longer in Bus. "Not Happy" Good luck to everyone!

FYI Jerolyn, at this point it is not Bombay with no class...that would be the Bankruptcy Court. Bombay did not have control over much (if anything) after they were sold...which is when policies, etc changed.

Just so all you people who were sad to see Bombay go..I hate the fact that you all think that Bombay had "High Quality Items." 99% of their furniture was particle board but was veneered with "Rubberwood"
Their bedding sets claimed to be this and that and were most of the time Polyester (YUCK, $500 for a polyester comforter?) As a former employee, I would tell my regulars not to purchase the "Furniture" if they planned on actually using the pieces because they scratch SO easily and are more for decoration than actual use. Shame on Bombay! They deserve what they get and Shame on the employees for spouting all the horse crap about "what a great company they were"

I didn't receive a gift card as a gift. I was given one in exchange for a table that I had purchased and returned because it turned out to be the wrong size when delivered. They only offered me a gift card because the 30 day grace period had passed for cash returns or credits. But... the reason the 30 days had passed is because it took THEM 3 1/2 weeks to deliver it! I live an inconvenient 65 miles from the nearest store, so it was then a couple more days before I could return the table. I did receive a claim form, filled it out and sent it in, but it's been four months and I still haven't heard a word. This is theft as far as I'm concerned! I thought Bombay had more class that that.
