There are two thing here that make this deal completely fubar. (1) You cannot copyright a title and (2) Asteroids the game had no story, characters, or anything narrative about it. Without the rights to the game you can legally make a movie about a spaceship crew blasting asteroids in space and title it Asteroids. Really they just bought the title design.

There already was Armageddon, Deep Impact, a silly movie called Asteroid with Michael Biehn...why did they have to have a "bidding war" where there is no script?

What about "Defender?" Flying saucers beam people up and if you shoot them too late the people plummet back into the city to their deaths.
I think Paramount should make a movie about that.
