From the May 9, 2005 issue of Furniture/Today
Four Pages

2004 Report
2003 Report

Furniture/Today’s exclusive report on the Top 25 Furniture Manufacturers and Importers ranks companies according to 2004 furniture shipments to the United States. Sources on the list must sell into the U.S. market, regardless of whether they have manufacturing, assembling operations or corporate offices in the United States. Non-furniture and non-manufacturing revenues, such as investment income, are excluded for purposes of the ranking.Contract furniture revenues are included in the figures because many companies do not report them separately from residential revenues. In addition, sales of certain decorative accessories are reported in notes when available. A total revenue figure is included in the notes for those companies that have revenues outside these categories and for those that sell outside the United States. The report also contains a "Who owns Whom" list giving the divisions and subsidiaries of the companies ranked.

Top 100 Furniture Stores

From the May 23, 2005 issue of Furniture/Today

Twenty-one pages

2004 List
2003 List

Rankings are based on sales of furniture, bedding and decorative accessories in the prior year.

In addition to sales, the report gives store counts at the end of the year and thumbnail descriptions of each store on the list, including the markets in which they operate, indication of price points and merchandise mix carried.

The report also identifies the top performers within the top 100 on such factors as sales per square foot and stock turns. An ranking of the largest single-source networks, sometimes called manufacturers’ gallery stores, is also included.

To qualify for the top 100, a retailer must specialize in home furnishings. The mix may include electronics, appliances, home textiles, tabletop and other home furnishings, butfurniture, bedding and decorative accessories must account for 25% or more of total sales. Also, at least 25% of a retailer’s furniture, bedding and decorative accessory sales must come from its stores.

Retailers with a broad merchandise mix, such as department stores, mass merchants, warehouse clubs and closeout retailers, that operate separate home furnishings stores are eligible, based on sales from the freestanding home stores only. For example, Big Lots is on the Furniture Stores to Watch list based on sales from its 43 freestanding furniture stores. The volume figure does not include sales from furniture departments in its main closeout stores. Retailers such as Costco and Bloomingdale’s, that operate stores specializing in home furnishings as well as stores offering a broad merchandise mix, also would be eligible for the Top 100.

Groups of stores with common ownership that operate under separate names also qualify for the list. Examples are Berkshire Hathaway and Hendricks Furniture Group.

Single-source networks such as Ethan Allen and La-Z-Boy, and franchised operations such as Norwalk- The Furniture Idea, are also included. For the most part, the store names seen by the consumer are the same. Sales for manufacturers’ dedicated store networks are based on the dedicated stores only and exclude sales from in-store galleries.

In cases of stores with identical sales, the company with the faster sales growth gets the higher rank.

All furniture, bedding and decorative accessory sales figures are Furniture/Today estimates, unless these figures are reported specifically to the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The top 100 furniture stores does not include mailing addresses or phone numbers for the retailers on the list.
