What’s hot at market: Neutral territory

    October 19, 2017

The landscape at market looks decidedly neutral this season but lacks nothing in terms of sophistication and style. Thanks to a gorgeous mélange of texture, shimmer and refined finishes, the world of interiors embodies modern luxe style.

Minimalist, contemporary designs get top marks this market and are artfully executed, while reimagined midcentury modern looks are exquisitely rendered. A heavy dose of white and cream — and all shades in between — keeps the look fresh and inviting, complemented by gray, beige and black. Black and white pairings, in particular, make a dramatic statement at showrooms around market.

Soft supple leathers, lush velvets, fur and faux fur, as well as fabrications such as raw silk and linen, join the mix for an elevated approach to design. Cane, raffia and other natural fibers lend a tactile element for added surface appeal. A hint of shimmer in the form of metallic threads and yarns lends added luster to soft goods, while warm brass finishes with almost a molten effect add understated glamour. Gesso finishes are also key this season.

Other top trends at market are marching to a definitive tribal beat with a host of gloriously exotic designs. And this is where the color comes in — with intensely pigmented pinks, yellows, blues and greens. Expect to see plenty of tie dye, ombre and kuba cloth, as well as other traditionally handcrafted textiles, reworked as lamp shades, artwork and upholstery. Sculptural accent pieces and furniture bear the look of the handmade, accompanied by totem-inspired motifs for truly sublime style.
